CRISS 1372 CD MANUEL VALERA and NEW CUBAN EXPRESS - IN MOTION -

2013 Grammy-nominated pianist and composer Manuel Valera is a
34-year-old powerhouse who has taken New York by storm since
relocating there from his native Cuba in 2000.
Having worked with many of today's finest artists in the genre
of Afro Cuban jazz, Valera made his Criss Cross debut on Brian
Lynch's Conclave Vol. 2 (Criss 1331 CD)

Valera's maiden voyage for Criss Cross features his band,
New Cuban Express, on a selection of originals that cover a good
deal of ground, touching on both Latin and swing sensibilities.

Yosvany Terry on alto sax, Tom Guarna on guitar and Alex Sipiagin
on trumpet make strong statements, while Valera tastefully uses
the Fender Rhodes to add new colors to the ensemble mix.
Bassist is Hans Glawischnig, on drums Ludwig Afonso, and Mauricio
Herrera on percussion.

His strongest set as leader, Valera's In Motion marks the pianist
and composer as a major talent on the rise.

CRISS 1373 CD MATT BREWER - MYTHOLOGY -

A leading bassist of his generation, Matt Brewer has distinguished
himself in groups led by Greg Osby, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Vijay Iyer,
John Escreet and many others. His Criss Cross appearances on Mike
Moreno's First In Mind and David Binney's Anacapa have also left
a lasting impression.

On Mythology, his debut as a leader, the Oklahoma City-born, Albuquerque,
New Mexico-raised Brewer leads a sextet with some of the fiercest
individualists on the jazz scene today: alto saxist Steve Lehman and
tenorist Mark Turner in the frontline; guitarist Lage Lund and pianist
David Virelles as ensemble voices and featured soloists as well;
drummer Marcus Gilmore bringing a flexible, swinging, highly structured
rhythmic vocabulary to the table.

With his mostly original pieces Brewer reveals an adventurous, lyrical
bent as a composer. The band's uptempo reading of Ornette Coleman's
"Free" truly catches fire as well.

CRISS 1374 CD BRICE WINSTON - CHILD'S PLAY -

On his Criss Cross debut, tenor saxophonist Brice Winston, an integral
member of Terence Blanchard's ensembles since 1998, follows his
long-time employer's policy of convening a band from the best and
brightest of the generation following his, and giving them ample
room to feed his imagination through their personal creativity.

Guitarist Mike Moreno, pianist David Virelles, bassist Joe Sanders
and drummer Marcus Gilmore join Winston for a stimulating program,
comprising five originals notable for their harmonic depth and melodic
orientation, as well as two freshly reimagined Wayne Shorter classics,
and the standard "I Thought About You".
