CRISS 1335 CD DAVID BINNEY SEXTET – BAREFOOTED TOWN -
Considered one of the finest and most individualistic alto saxist-composers
on the jazz scene, David Binney continues his ascending artistic evolution
with Barefooted Town.
Joined by rising trumpet star Ambrose Akinmusire and longtime collaborator,
tenor saxist Mark Turner on the frontline, Binney turns in another fine
example of his skills as a distinctive player, composer of music both
intellectual and emotional powerful, and seeker of a new jazz expression.
On piano the young Cuban, David Virelles, Eivind Opsvik on bass and the
great Dan Weiss on drums.

CRISS 1336 CD ALEX SIPIAGIN SEXTET – DESTINATIONS UNKNOWN -
Trumpeter Alex Sipiagin’s ninth Criss Cross album may be his most
conceptually ambitious.
The 43-year-old trumpeter, these days garnering broad international
recognition as a solo artist, as well as for his inspired virtuoso playing
in various Dave Holland and Mingus Orchestra contexts, offers seven
original pieces – performed by a distinguished band of A-listers – that
contain heady polyphony, substantial melodies, beautiful voicings, and
intoxicating rhythms.
It’s a cutting edge of the 21st century jazz.
The band: Chris Potter, tenor sax and flute; David Binney, alto sax;
Craig Taborn, piano and fender rhodes; Boris Koslov, bass; and
Eric Harland, drums.

CRISS 1337 CD DANNY GRISSETT TRIO – STRIDE -
On Stride, his fourth Criss Cross leader date, pianist Danny Grissett
returns to the trio format he navigated with such panache and imagination
on his first two outings for the label.
Long-time bass partner Vicente Archer and top-of-the-class drummer Marcus
Gilmore join Grissett in a fluent three-way conversation on a reflective
program that incorporates the American Songbook, the European canon,
original tunes by trumpeters Nicholas Payton and (his current employer)
Tom Harrell, and three heady Grissett originals.
As always, the leader’s playing is melody-driven, harmonically acute,
swinging and focused; he again proves himself one of the major voices
on his instrument among the under-40 crowd.

CRISS 1338 CD MIKE MORENO QUARTET – FIRST IN MIND -
Following up his 2008 Criss Cross debut Third Wish (Criss 1303 CD)
acclaimed guitarist Mike Moreno returns with another brilliant quartet
outing, First in Mind.
Bringing a flowing, centered tone and ceaseless improvisational ideas
to the table, Mike offers a mix of jazz standards, compelling originals,
and refreshing reinventions of modern repertoire (Sonny Rollins’s Airegin,
Milton Nascimento’s Miracle of the Fishes, Joe Zawinul’s In a Silent Way).
Joined by the esteemed Aaron Parks on piano, Matt Brewer on bass and
fellow Houston native Kendrick Scott on drums, Mike cements his reputation
as one of the strongest guitarists on the New York and international scenes.
