CRISS 1331 CD BRIAN LYNCH AND SPHERES OF INFLUENCE – CONCLAVE VOL. 2 –

A versatile trumpeter able to navigate in both the Jazz and Latin music
fields, Grammy Award winner Brian Lynch returns to the Criss Cross fold
with ConClave Volume 2, a tour-de-force for his revamped Spheres of
Influence ensemble.

Up-and-comers Yosvany Terry on alto, Manuel Valera on piano, with
bassist Luques Curtis, drummer Justin Brown, and percussionist Pedro
Martinez make the scene for a diverse set of mainly Lynch originals.

Mixing the Afro-Cuban beat with touches of samba and funk, Lynch
comes up with his best concoction to date of spicy Latin sounds.

CRISS 1332 CD REEDS AND DEEDS – TENOR TIME –

Reuniting for their third outing under the Reeds and Deeds banner,
tenor saxophonists Eric Alexander and Grant Stewart lock horns once
more in a spirit of mutual admiration.

While their collaborative ethos makes Tenor Time the thoroughly
musical affair that it is, Eric and Grant bring to the date that
unmistakable charge of friendly rivalry as well.

Joined by the formidable roster of David Hazeltine (piano),
John Webber (bass), and Joe Farnsworth (drums) – Eric’s bandmates
in the all-star sextet One For All – this two-tenor frontline
means business.

The program, rich in standard repertoire (“Tenderly”) and postbop
classics (Donald Byrd’s “Omicron”), also includes a cutthroat tenor
battle on the burning “Rise and Shine”, made famous by John Coltrane.

On his Criss Cross debut tenor saxophonist Stacy Dillard projects
the intelligence and fire that have made him a major force in
New York hardcore jazz over the last decade.

Playing tenor and soprano saxophone with great facility and no cliches,
Dillard leads a strong quintet of young masters – Orrin Evans, piano;
Craig Magnano, guitar; Ryan Berg, bass; Jeremy ‘Bean’ Clemons, drums –
through a set of meaty originals, bluesy, soulful, and swinging,
reinforcing his ever-growing stature as a must-hear voice.

CRISS 1334 CD YAKOV OKUN TRIO – NEW YORK ENCOUNTER –

A major force in Russian Jazz since the mid ‘90s, pianist Yakov Okun,
finally places himself on the international stage with his Criss Cross
debut, a trio date with world-class bass-drum team Ben Street and Billy
Drummond, on which he mixes challenging original material with strong
arrangements and less traveled Songbook repertoire and tunes by Sonny
Rollins and Fats Waller.

At 38, Okun is an individualistic voice, an important player, able in
his improvisations to refract an entire timeline of jazz vocabulary
in a cogent, compositional manner.
