We are still working on making 30-second sound samples available
for the new releases. These should be ready by February 8.
CRISS 1309 CD JOE COHN - SHARED CONTEMPLATIONS -
Joe, the son of legendary saxophonist Al Cohn, is widely regarded as
one of the finest jazz guitarists of our era - melodically quick-witted,
harmonically advanced, relentlessly swinging. His recent work with
Harry Allen, Jay Leonhart, Buddy DeFranco and countless others has
that timeless invigorating quality that marks jazz at its very best.
Shared Contemplations, a marvellous collection of standards, classic
bebop, cool jazz rarities and originals, only strengthens the case for
Joe Cohn as a guaranteed pleasure, a leader in the field.
Featuring Peter Beets on piano throughout, the disc also highlights the
strengths of two different rhythm sections: J.J. Wiggins and Joost van
Schaik alternate with Peter Washington and Willie Jones III on bass and
drums, respectively.

CRISS 1310 CD JONATHAN KREISBERG - NIGHT SONGS -
Guitarist Jonathan Kreisberg offers up an intriguing ballad session
with Night Songs, his third Criss Cross release since 2004's Nine
Stories Wide.
The mood is decidely lush and spacious, and features truly unique takes
on a range of familiar items as well as less played tunes such as
Warm Valley and Nefertiti.
The disc features his current trio with bassist Matt Penman and drummer
Mark Ferber, and adds pianist Gary Versace for quartet cuts as well as
a haunting duo version of Laura.

CRISS 1311 CD ALEX SIPIAGIN - MIRAGES -
On his seventh Criss Cross album Russian trumpeter Alex Sipiagin
offers a program of four originals, a tune apiece by Joe Henderson
and Wayne Shorter from their 60s Blue Note period, and a songbook
chestnut, approaching each one with virtuoso chops and fresh ideas,
in the process reaffirming his position as a major voice in his
instrument's timeline.
Joining him are pianist Mulgrew Miller, Sipiagin's bandmate in the
Dave Holland Sextet; tenor saxophonist Seamus Blake, a musical colleague
since the mid-90's, when both started working with the Mingus Big Band;
bassist Boris Kozlov, with whom Sipiagin emigrated to New York from
Russia in 1991; and state-of-the-art New York drummer Johnathan Blake.

CRISS 1312 CD DAVID KIKOSKI - ALMOST STANDARDS -
Pianist David Kikoski, who's partnered so ably on past Criss Cross
albums with hornmen like Alex Sipiagin, Seamus Blake, Conrad Herwig
and Wycliffe Gordon, is perhaps best known for a series of compelling
trio albums he's recorded for the label over the past decade. On each,
he's been backed by some of the era's most talented and intuitive
rhythm players.
Now along comes Almost Standards, David's latest venture, on which
he mixes it up with bassist Eric Revis (whose resume includes work
with Betty Carter, Louis Hayes, Billy Harper and a bunch of Marsalis
family members), and much-in-demand drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts (now
with Branford Marsalis), and an invigorating presence on two earlier
Kikoski CDs.
The new album's hints at a mix of material serving as take-off points
this time out: harmonically intriguing tunes that are already standards
- probably ought to be.
