CRISS 1302 CD WYCLIFFE GORDON - BONES TONES -

For his seventh Criss Cross recording, Wycliffe Gordon pairs off with
Andre Hayward, his long-time partner in the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra
trombone section, for a carefree, straightforward, swinging romp through
various nooks and crannies of the jazz and Broadway songbooks, as well
as the several varieties of the blues.

Pianist Mike LeDonne, bassist John Webber, and drum giant Kenny Washington
push, prod, and complement the flow throughout.

CRISS 1303 CD MIKE MORENO QUARTET - THIRD WISH -

An increasingly visible force on the New York scene in recent years,
guitarist Mike Moreno makes his Criss Cross debut on a program mixing
choice selections from the jazz songbook (Shorter, Henderson, Strayhorn)
and his own evocative originals.

Propelled by Moreno's fellow Houstonian, drummer Kendrick Scott, and
young veterans pianist Kevin Hays and bassist Doug Weiss, Moreno plays
throughout with characteristic melodic elegance, rhythmic drive, and
harmonic nuance.

CRISS 1304 CD TIM WARFIELD - ONE FOR SHIRLEY -

A veteran of the groups of Nicholas Payton and Adonis Rose, saxophonist
Tim Warfield breaks significantly from the format of the four previous
Criss Cross sides.

One For Shirley pays homage to the legendary organist Shirley Scott,
with whom Warfield played on numerous occasions back in the early 90s.

As was the case on the critically acclaimed A Whisper In The Midnight
(Criss 1122), Terell Stafford makes for a perfect front-line partner,
the trumpeter obviously comfortable in the organ combo format thanks
to his current work in Matt Wilson's Arts and Crafts.

Denver resident and rising star Pat Bianchi tips his hat to Scott,
but does so in a way that proves he's an individualist worthy of wider
recognition.

On drums the great Byron Landham from Philadelphia. Daniel G. Sadownick
plays congas and percussion.

Covering a good deal of ground, Warfield is heard on both tenor and
soprano saxophones as he plays it cool on "Yours is My Heart Alone",
updates swing numbers like "Stompin' at the Savoy", and settles in
the groove for "The Beat Goes On".

CRISS 1305 CD RALPH BOWEN QUINTET - FIVE -

For Ralph Bowen's fourth date as a leader for Criss Cross, he returns
to the organ combo format that made 2002s Soul Proprietor a significant
departure and valuable addition to the tenor man's precious catalog.

Returning from that session are trumpeter and Criss Cross regular
John Swana, organist Sam Yahel, and guitar man Peter Bernstein,
with drummer Dana Hall rounding out the ensemble.

Bowen's muse is an advanced take on the freewheeling implications of
John Coltrane's pioneering vernacular. As such, he tackles the framework
of the organ goup with a fresh outlook that has more to do with the late
60s work of Larry Young than the grits and gravy approach of Jimmy Smith.

In addition to the four of his own originals, Bowen puts a new spin on
Woody Shaw's "Rahsaan's Run", Joe Henderson's "Step Lightly", and U2's
"Drowning Man".
