CRISS 1273 CD JESSE VAN RULLER QUARTET - VIEWS -

It's been ten years now since Jesse Van Ruller won the Thelonious Monk
Jazz Competition (the first European artist to do so) and yet audiences
have yet to fully appreciate his immense talents.

On his third Criss Cross date, Van Ruller really comes into his own as
a unique composer and guitarist on a session composed entirely of originals
and featuring Seamus Blake, tenor sax; Sam Yahel, Hammond B3 organ; and
Bill Stewart, drums; the same gentlemen who helped make Circles such a
critical success.

CRISS 1274 CD	VICTOR GOINES QUARTET - NEW ADVENTURES -

A member of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and the Wynton Marsalis
Septet for more than a decade, Victor Goines - who also runs the Jazz
Department at the New York's Juilliard School of Music - hasn't had much
time to present his own vivid musical vision.

Like his three previous solo dates, Goines' Criss Cross leader debut is
a swinging affair.

The leader, a clarinet master of long standing, also focuses here on the
tenor and soprano saxophone, showcasing a swaggering, romantic approach
to the former and a pure, melodic concept on the latter.

The program mixes jazz standards and pungent originals; propelling the
proceedings is the top-notch rhythm section you expect to hear on a
Criss Cross date - pianist Peter Martin, LCJO bassist Carlos Henriquez,
and drummer Greg Hutchinson.

CRISS 1275 CD	JIM ROTONDI QUINTET - IRON MAN -

On his sixth session as a leader for Criss Cross Jazz, One For All
trumpeter Jim Rotondi pushes the hard bop envelope, broadening the
music's horizons with a new quintet that utilizes veteran vibraphonist
Steve Nelson in place of the usual piano, giving the group a more open
expansive sound.

The band, which also features tenor great Jimmy Greene in the front
line and the powerful rhythm team of bassist Doug Weiss and drummer
Bill Stewart, digs in on a program evenly balanced between the leader's
four fine compositions (including the title track, a dedication to
pianist Harold Mabern based on the chord changes of Tune Up) and one
each by Greene, James Williams, George Gershwin, and Neal Hefti.

CRISS 1276 CD	DAVID HAZELTINE TRIO - PERAMBULATION -

On Perambulation, his sixth date as a leader for Criss Cross,
David Hazeltine reconvenes the trio from the critically acclaimed
2004 release, Close To You.

Utilizing incisive skills as a composer, arranger, and pianist,
Hazeltine plays three originals, Buddy Montgomery's Blues For David,
and five standards, including a provocative treatment of Cole Porter's
Love For Sale.

Bassist Peter Washington and drummer Joe Farnsworth surpass the role
of accompanists and make indispensable contributions to this exceptional
recording

CRISS 1277 CD	DONNY McCASLIN QUARTET / QUINTET - GIVE 'N' GO -

A 2004 Grammy nominee for his solo work on Maria Schneider's Concert In
The Garden, Donny McCaslin performs more often as a sideman extraordinaire
(Steps Ahead, Danilo Perez, Brian Blade, Maria Schneider Orchestra,
Mingus Orchestra) than as a leader.

On his fourth solo album and Criss Cross leader debut, the 39-year-old
saxophonist-composer, joined by an A-list quintet (John Swana, trumpet;
Steve Gardenas, guitar; Scott Colley, bass; Gene Jackson, drums) presents
seven melodic, harmonically meaty originals and a fresh arrangement of
Thelonious Monk's Eronel.
