CRISS 1268 CD CONRAD HERWIG QUINTET - OBLIGATION -

From Latin romps through Coltrane territory to updating the two bone lead first
launched by Kai and J.J., Conrad Herwig's musical diversity over the course
of his six previous Criss Cross releases has been nothing short of remarkable.

On Obligation, he takes things a step further with a funky organ combo set up
that highlights the extraordinary work of guitarist Mark Whitfield and the
budding talents of organist Kyle Koehler.
Tenor saxophonist Seamus Blake and drummer Gene Jackson complete the lineup,
helping to make this set stand out among Herwig's already impressive catalog.

CRISS 1269 CD	GRANT STEWART QUINTET - GRANT STEWART + 4 -

Grant Stewart's third Criss Cross date as a leader features the spirited
interplay between the tenor saxophonist and his longtime band mate,
guitarist Joe Cohn.
Stewart's brawny, expressive solos contrast nicely with Cohn's fleet
yet temperate lines.

Supported by an active rhythm section, including star pianist Bill Charlap,
bassist Paul Gill, and drummer Willie Jones III, Stewart and Cohn burn
through a program of standards, plus an original composition by
Cohn's father, jazz great Al Cohn.

CRISS 1270 CD	ALEX SIPIAGIN QUINTET - RETURNING -

For his fifth Criss Cross recording, Alex Sipiagin assembles a top-shelf
quintet of generational peers, all colleagues who rank at the top of the
pack on their respective instruments, to play a program of original music.

The mood is melodic, polyphonic, rhythmically intense, more simmering
than fiery, defined by Sipiagin's burnished, golden sound, the individualistic
voice-like statements of tenorist Seamus Blake and guitarist Adam Rogers,
and the intuitive accompaniment of bassist Scott Colley and drummer
Antonio Sanchez.

Two tunes, Son of Thirteen and Snova are specially written for this date
by world famous guitarist Pat Metheny.

CRISS 1271CD	BRIAN LYNCH LATIN JAZZ SEXTET - CONCLAVE -_

Nurtured on bebop during long tenures with Art Blakey, Horace Silver and
Phil Woods, trumpeter Brian Lynch has learned Latin music from the inside
out during two decades with Eddie Palmieri.

Here Lynch and a state-of-the-art ensemble (Criss Cross veteran Ralph Bowen
on tenor sax; Venezuelan pianist Luis Perdomo, piano; Russian bassist
Boris Kozlov; Cubans Ernesto Simpson on trap drums and Roberto Quintero,
percussion) perform 7 Lynch originals that blend the leader's ultra-sophisticated
harmonic language with idiomatic Afro-Caribbean rhythms, and the standard
"Ïnvitation."

CRISS 1272 CD	HERLIN RILEY SEXTET - CREAM OF THE CRESCENT -

On his second Criss Cross date, Herlin Riley, drummer with the Lincoln
Center Jazz Orchestra since 1992, assembles an all-star lineup from different
eras of the band.

The front line comprises Criss Cross veteran Wycliffe Gordon on trombone,
Victor Goines on saxes and clarinet, and Wynton Marsalis, Riley's employer
since 1988, on trumpet, with bassist Reginald Veal and pianist Eric Lewis, the
band's youngster, rounding out the group.

The sound is New Orleans, modern, touching on the legacy of such original
Crescent City thinkers as James Black, Alvin Batiste and Ellis Marsalis; the
execution is replete with nuance and sublime grooves.
